[…] and Mushroom Hill Act 2 from Generations.

- alviestrums

And here’s the second one!

I really dig the groove to this track! I think it’s the drums and bass that really make it happen for me, with the slap bass and the laid back beat. It’s really heavy on two and four! The melody line emulates what was heard in the original track, and it’s a very cool touch, while still keeping the same sort of vibe from the original. The comping and padding has a lot of reverb onto it (aside from the distorted guitar in the back). Another thing about the drums! I’m really into the ride cymbal on the offbeats, I think it creates such a nice groove, and it’s all very in the pocket. The melody is really elaborate, while still coming back to its main premise. It’s very groovy!

Title: Emerald Shore

Artist: Greg2k

Description: With a title like that you would be expecting an Emerald Hill Zone or Emerald Coast remix right? Well, this is NEITHER! This is a fantastic, lengthy house music remix of Deeper (the theme of Death Chamber) and Space Trip Steps (the theme of Meteor Herd)! I know that sounds crazy but you will be hooked as soon as you hear the source material. Not to mention, that sound of the waves crashing throughout the track. I think this one is great and I hope you guys too as well.

On The Edge...for Eternal Engine

I request final fortress and eternal engine.

- mediarebel

Happy Friday, everyone! While Final Fortress has been done, I can supply you with Eternal Engine!

I love the opening this one has, it’s really driving and forceful. Lots of harmonized guitar lines, in the same distortion level that is normal for all the Tails levels in this game. I like the little synth aspects going on as well—it really emphasizes that we’re in space, that futuristic techno feel. The bass is really busy in the background, without being too overpowering; the most it’s heard is during the synth lead, during the second half of the melody. The drums are pretty straight forward, except for the top and the fills spread out throughout the track. This track has an overall major feel, standard for the Tails levels, and while the vibe is similar to Sonic’s levels, it has its own flair that distinguishes itself from them. Kind of what Tails journey is all about!

Hey, just started following your blog and I think it’s super! I’d love to know what you think of a couple of tracks: You’re My Number One from Sonic R […]

- saintjimmyoh

Thank you so much for the praise! I always love posting stuff from the R soundtrack!

This is such an upbeat and fun track, featuring the lovely T.J. Davis! I love the beat going on, it’s got a very hip hop vibe, and just adds to the mood. This features some more sneaky modulations, as the chorus is in a different key than the verse. The chorus is very catchy, with its rising melody and easy to remember verse. The synth lines sprinkled here and there are equally as memorable, creating its own little hook. The brass synths are nice in the chorus as well, adding to the color. The chord progressions in the verse and chorus are similar, but because of the modulation, they sound quite different—it’s a neat little trick! The harmonies in the vocals are infectious as well!

Hidden Palace (unused)

How about the unused theme in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Genesis that was to be used for Hidden Palace?

- wreck-it-mikey

I think this is the track you’re looking for! Hope everyone’s doing well!

This has a slow waltz feel, disrupted by the off hand snare hits. It moves mostly by the heavy chords going on in the main melody and supporting counterlines. It’s got a trance like feel to it, like thousands of people waltzing in the desert, dipping all at the same time. The very short turn around brings about some chordal stability, but otherwise, everything is constantly moving in a strange canon, making it a little hard to solidify one’s place in the form. With that said, I love the tones being used, and I think that adds to the charm of this track! I’m surprised that it wasn’t used!

Aquarium Park - Act 1

Good evening! Let’s jump into a fishbowl!

Sonic Colors has some great music, and this is just one of the many cool tracks on it. It really compliments the mood of this stage, with the gorgeous graphics and the underwater essence. I love the cascading piano line that flows through this, as well as the half time sort of feel running through. It’s in 4/4, but it’s fast enough to be conducted in two, and that creates a real flow throughout.

The simple melodic sense is really pretty as well. I love repeating themes, and this has a lot of them. I also really dig the II7 chord in the first theme (I guess it’s the chorus? With the F major section being the A section, and the second relative minor section being the B), third chord in. It adds a lot of color! And of course, I love the instrumentation, and the shuffling, driving drums. This is one of my favorite flute practice songs. It makes being Sonic underwater quite enjoyable!

I remember at least touching on all of the other avalible worlds before hitting Aquarium Park because I was like “Oh god, a water level.”, and before you hit that first riff I was just not feeling the entire level and then you hear it at the same time you break out of the first tunnel and…

I’m pretty sure this is also queued, but I just love this song and level to pieces and I should complete this game one day.

Heeeeey, there’s no Sonic Gems music or remixes here yet :U Could we fix that with the MJZ Remix of Open Your Heart?

Hey everyone, here’s the real track!

Oh my goodness, I love this upon first listen! It’s really smooth and mellow, even with the original vocals put on there! I love all the percussion going on, with the shakers and hand percussion going on! And that Rhodes electric keyboard sound, it’s really beautiful, both on comping and soloing! There’s even a little acoustic guitar sound, and some heavier synth sounds too! It ends a bit abruptly, which is a little disappointing for me, but overall it’s such a beautiful mix! The entire vibe of it is so different from the original, and yet it’s just as satisfying. Thanks so much for requesting this!

Hi, think this blog/what you’re doing is awesome! If it hasn’t been done, what do you think on the Egg Dragoon boss fight theme from Sonic Unleashed, which happens to be one of my favorite songs from the Sonic series?

- rhylton

Thank you so much for the praise! Here’s today’s real track!

I like the heavy orchestration on this track! We’ve got strings and horns combined with a synth bass and a largely electronic drum kit. It make for an interesting contrast as your last fight with the werehog! There’s a lot of stuff going on melodically too—Unleashed is known for its long loops, and this is no exception. While there are similar chord progressions (with some pretty cool chords too; I’m sensing a lot of flat-III going on), the melody is always shifting just slightly, constantly building. The melody is constantly moving or staccato, not a lot of extended, elongated notes going on. There’s good use of counter melody too, especially between the strings and the horns. I’d say that I’m disappointed that real horns weren’t used, but this is mixed so well, and there’s so much going on, that it becomes a very small error. The section with the sliding strings is very cool, as well as the steady build to the loop; lots of tension in there. I can see why it’s one of your favorites!

How do you feel about Sonic Chaos’ Aqua Planet music?

- Anonymous

Hey cats! A little late night groove for tonight!

I think what sticks out the most to me is all the bending in the 8-bit melody. It’s unique, as if they’re trying to give a real sound feel, make it sound loose in the format. The melody is really catchy and prominent in the front of the mix, making for a cool sound. The bass lays back during the harmonized melodies, but starts walking a cool line during some of the busier parts. The percussion line is fairly simple, but adds just enough groove in the back to really make the mix. It’s something easy to listen to over and over again, which is a good quality in any video game piece, let alone an 8-bit piece. Some of the short notes really have a lilting quality to them that remind me of old Game Boy pinball games (the one I have in mind is Pokemon Pinball). I dig it!
