I think this is a good way to jazz up your evening.
This is Rouge’s “image” song, or theme song from Sonic Adventure 2. You don’t actually hear it all that much, at least the vocal version, and it’s a shame because it’s absolutely lovely. I’m a bit of a sucker for samba grooves, but I think my favorite part is the instrumentation. The upright bass sliding around, vibes, electric keyboard, acoustic guitar, the harp at the beginning kicking it down, triangle, I think there’s clave in there as well. It’s a really great mix, not to mention all the horn kicks and the flute solo near the end.
The vocal is really nice as well, very smooth, even when she hits that high note at the end of the first chorus, that lovely major seventh on top, mm, I love it! The break down at the end where there’s a lot of scatting vocals is great too. The song itself is saucy too, just like our favorite well-endowed femme fetale. I really like how they kept this samba theme to all of her actual levels in the game as well, it creates a nice coherency! Just like Knuckles has those raps, Sonic has the upbeat rock (as well as Tails, but of a different flavor), and so forth. This is such a great jam, is basically what I’m saying!
“I’m ready to gamble, it’s time to play the game.”
